IKEA Vilasund and Backabro Review – IKEA’s 2014 New Sofabeds

[sg_popup id=”3″ event=”onload”][/sg_popup]Much to everyone’s surprised, IKEA released another 2 series of sofabeds mid this year(2014); let’s not forget that there were already 2 new models last year (friheten and moheda);

The 2 new sofa beds are called IKEA Vilasund and IKEA Backabro, both comes in a 3 seater and a sectional with storage compartment (Manstad’s style).

The IKEA Vilasund Sofabed with Chaise Lounge

So when we entered the store and did our routinely checking for new products, the IKEA Vilasund 3 seater did catch our eye as we looked at each other, and back at the sofa again

Chuck: “This Kivik looks… weird”
Henry: “I don’t think that’s a Kivik bro.”

This was in fact, the IKEA Vilasund 3 seat sofa bed which we weren’t so impressed with but guess what we found a couple of metres away..

The IKEA Vilasund 2 Seat Sofabed with Chaise

It was mind blowing – it was essentially combining the comfort of the Kivik with the aesthetics and function of the Manstad sofa bed. We knew we had to get our asses on that thing.

The verdict? The IKEA Vilasund is surprisingly more comfy than the Manstad to say the least, arguably even better than the IKEA Friheten Sofa Bed. The grey material used here is like the itchy Kivik, but since it is fully slipcovered – we can slip it into a more comfortable cover that works better with your living space. And the best part is that you can place the chaise lounge section to the left or right of the sofa, and switch whenever you like.

The only complaint (mine) or praise (from Henry’s) is that we have the same unnaturally low armrests as per the IKEA Kivik Sofa Series review and another peeve that would be the “faux” partition line that sort of divides the seat and back cushion into two even though it is actually one, long piece.

The IKEA Backabro Sofa Bed with Chaise Lounge

Needless to say, IKEA tends to make things with pretty predictable patterns. Firstly, the Fagelbo (the sofa bed prior to the Manstad) was a tad inconvenient to use with its sideway-opening chaise so it was improved to the Manstad. I’m of course only speculating, but it makes sense and soon with the growing popularity of the Manstad, they brought out the newer sofa beds (in 2012-2013): the IKEA Friheten, Moheda Lugnvik.

We can see that the Friheten is a newer Manstad with just a lower armrest on one side (so taller people can rest their legs comfortably across the sofa bed); the Moheda is an “Ektorp-ish” Sofa bed for those who like rounded arms and the Lugnvik is just the scaled down version of their sofa beds.

So with the Backabro, it’s essentially the same as the Vilasund – but again an Ektorp-ish version, just like the Moheda. In fact, it’s essentially a Moheda but more comfy. The back cushions are spongy and it really just gives us a better vibe overall. We still aren’t happy with the arms, but that’s why the IKEA Vilasund exists.

Price: A$999 in Australia
Colours: Beige, Brown, Natural and Grey
Size/Dimension (W x D x H): 248 x 150/88 x 71 cm

Last but not least, the awesome thing about these new sofa beds is that they come completely slipcovered! Hooray for long lasting sofas!

I was wondering if there was a weight limitations on this sofa. Does anyone know?

Why doesn’t Ikea feel confident enough in the quality of the Backabro to warranty the sofa against defects. The showroom model had a broken mechanism. I would hate to spend $900 on the sofa, only to see it unusable after a few months.

This is the only thing stopping me from buying it.

I’ve had the Vilasund sofabed with chaise (charcoal color fabric) for three months, with normal sofa level of use, and it already is having problems. The fabric is pilling heavily on the seating surfaces, the trundle section creaks when you sit on it, and now the mechanism that connects the trundle to the sofa detaches easily if it isn’t pulled out at the perfect angle (as did the floor model, which the employee reassured me was unusual damage from a previous customer). I leave the trundle part out most of the time and the springs are jutting out to the point where it feels like sitting on an old mattress (this is MATTARP). Three months.

I definitely wouldn’t recommend the Vilasund. I expected IKEA-level quality instead of an upscale piece, but this sofa already looks and feels shabby, and there is no warranty that I’m aware of. The IKEA-dispatched assembly guys had absolutely no idea what they were doing on this model (and this was in August, so it wasn’t brand new), so I’m sure that doesn’t help matters. After *an hour and a half* of listening to them try to assemble, curse, and complain to each other that they had not been trained on this procedure, it seems clear that IKEA doesn’t have their stuff figured out for this model yet. I’m going to try talking to the store about the issues, but I’m not optimistic with no warranty.

I hope this info helps someone else who is considering Vilasund. Heed the red flags…I wish I had.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the Vilasund, Carolina!

I’m glad you’re pointing this out – many people would love to hear an actual customer’s first-hand experience with these newer IKEA products, especially after 3 months.

Hopefully this was indeed a lemon piece, if anyone else shared the same experience do reply to this thread!

I’d love to know if you’re planning to make covers for the vilasund.

      Yes we are Erin 🙂

Are you looking at the sofabed with chaise? Or just the sofabed only? Do drop me an email at info@comfortworks.com.au anytime for a quote!

Do get some samples firstly nonetheless, we’d feel it’s always good to have a good look and touch of the fabrics in person before making a decision to purchase the slipcovers.

      Cheers,
      Chuck

We’re considering getting a Backabro very shortly, so I’d be interested to know what slip covers you are going to make as if there is good options and good price, we’ll just put up with the cheapest colour option from IKEA directly. Have you completed making any yet?

We’ve sent out 2 different protytpes for the villasund and backabro recently and will be updating the site with the new models soon; Typically we make a few of them just to get the template right before we start selling them on the store. Stay tuned, i’m quite sure they’ll be up in a week or so.
