It’s that time of year again, friends.
Being sofa lovers, we naturally love nothing more than to cozy up with a blanket, plenty of snacks and our best sofa buds to binge watch our favourite holiday movies.
And because we figured everyone could use a little more cheer than usual this Christmas, we went ahead and made a list of the best spirit-lifting, heart-tugging movies currently streaming on Netflix that’ll do the job, and do it well.
Care to join us? We’ll save you a seat!
1. A Christmas Prince
It’s a very different kind of Christmas for a young journalist who’s sent abroad to get the scoop on a handsome playboy prince. Naturally, extravagance, mayhem, mystery and romance ensue: All the ingredients for a holiday movie that gets your heart racing and gives you the fuzzies. We hear that 53 people watch it every day and frankly, we’re not surprised.
2. The Princess Switch
While still on the subject of holiday-loving royalty, we’re very impressed with Vanessa Hudgens’ portrayal of not one but two characters in this year-end heart-warmer. She works double duty as Stacy, a down-to-earth baker from Chicago and Margaret, the Duchess of Montenaro and soon-to-be-princess. Trouble brews when the two look-alikes end up crossing paths, triggering erm, complications that send both down unexpected trajectories.
3. Angela’s Christmas
This heart-warming animated movie is based on Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt’s memoir Angela’s Ashes, and is centered around an event from his mother’s childhood that he weaves into a story focused around the importance of warmth, kindness and unconditional love from family. Tip: Tears are guaranteed, so be sure to have a box of tissues handy.
4. A Very Murray Christmas
Looking for a reason to get star-struck over the holidays? Well, you don’t have to look (or go) very far this with this star-studded Christmas show about the making of a Christmas show. This is Christmas entertainment pure and simple, with many familiar celebrity faces to look forward to, including George Clooney, Rashida Jones, Miley Cyrus, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Chris Rock and of course, Bill Murray. Bonus: They all sing!
5. Holiday Rush
Rush Williams is a successful radio D.J. in New York who’s been spoiling his four kids ever since their mother died. But when he loses his job over Christmas, Williams and his kids are forced to celebrate the holidays with a lot less in this family-focused heart-warmer. You won’t want to put away those tissues just yet…
6. Holiday In The Wild
Tired of your typical holiday-in-the-city tale? This exotic adventure may just be what you need. Kate and her husband, who’re supposed to fly off for a romantic ‘second honeymoon’ in Africa end up going their separate ways and Kate, flying off on a honeymoon-turned-solo-safari when he walks away from their marriage unexpectedly. Have an extra large bucket of popcorn at the ready and your seat belts buckled up real tight, because Kate and her new love interest (whoops, did we just give that away?) are about to take you on a wild, wild ride.
7. The Holiday Calendar
If you’re a fan of sappy rom-coms and a believer in magic, this one’s for you. When Abby, a photographer working a dead-end job gets gifted an advent calendar with magical powers by her grandfather, mysterious things start to happen. Will she find her dream job and the love of her life in one holiday season? You’ll have to watch to find out!
8. Merry Happy Whatever
Family is the greatest gift of all…unless yours turns out to be a cult. In this Netflix original series, Emmy brings home new boyfriend Matt to meet her close-knit but eccentric family. Emmy and Matt’s relationship, along with everyone’s patience are put to the test as the family’s strong-willed patriarch, Don, does his level best to deal with the stress of the holidays and needs of his family in his own way. You can expect to laugh, cry and feel everything else in-between as you watch this one.
9. Klaus
Jesper is a struggling postal academy student who finds himself being stationed on a frozen island near the Arctic Circle, where he makes friends with Alva, a local teacher and Klaus, a reclusive carpenter who lives alone in a cabin filled with handmade toys. This Santa Claus-retelling unveils burgeoning friendships, offering plenty of touching, heartwarming moments a long the way — warm enough to turn any frown upside down.
10. Holidate
Single, dateless and desperate to get their nosy families off their backs, Sloane and Jackson make a pact to be each other’s ‘holidate’ for every festive occasion for the next year, minus the usual ‘entanglements’ that come with relationships. But as the year comes to an end, they find themselves with more in common than they thought….including *gasp* feelings. Happy holidays!
