How dirty is your couch and why

When was the last time you cleaned your couch?

No, hastily dusting off the crumbs from your bag of chips doesn’t count. Just like leaving the bathroom without washing your hands, leaving your couch sticky from all the snacks is just… no.

Here are all the ways your couch can get dirty, and what you can do to make it a thing of the past.

How your couch gets dirty over time

You’re just living life and one day, the less-than-desirable state of your couch finally sinks in. How does this “buildup” seem to happen overnight?

Life can get busy, but still

This can happen for many reasons, though these come in at the top:

1.   Dust mites and particles

Have you seen those close-up videos of house mites that randomly pop up in ads?

This one was enough to send me into a frenzy of vacuuming, impulse buys of cleaning supplies, and how-to videos on dealing with a bug infestation (for the record, there was no bug infestation).

Warning: play with caution!

2.   Dead skin cells, dandruff and oils

A college friend of mine used to have random coughing fits, seemingly out of nowhere. It wasn’t until much later that he figured out it was from his father’s dandruff, happily collecting on the armchair he usually sat on to read.

I wish I was joking – don’t forget to dust off, people.

3.   Aerosols and micro-plastics that linger in the air

While it may seem like a non-issue, things like deodorising sprays can linger in the air. This is the case for air fresheners as well, especially the kind that is programmed to release at certain intervals.

Its chemical properties tend to stick to the surfaces in your space, with every spritz.

4.   Spills and crumbs from those Netflix nights in

Performance Weave Teal, in case you were wondering

We all pretend that lightly dusting things off the couch makes it disappear. To be fair, it does (until it’s time for vacuuming and it sounds like a bunch of thumbtacks going up the dust bag).

Enter slipcovers: never worry about any of these things happening, ever.

Are your slipcovers machine-washable?

Yes! With the exception of Performance Weave and any of our leathers, all Comfort Works slipcovers are absolutely machine-washable.

Just pop them in the wash and they’re good to go. All our slipcovers come with tags and recommendations for slipcover care.

Washing your slipcovers has never been easier

How often should I be washing my slipcovers?

You should be washing your slipcovers every 3 to 6 months.

Not sure how to wash the slipcover you have? Look no further than our Fabric care details and care guide, where you can find washing instructions, down to what exactly your slipcover is made of.

Wrap-up

Now that the reasons behind your dirty couch have been uncovered, you have all the more reason to cover it (after the long-delayed deep clean, of course).
