IKEA Klobo sofa storage hack

Get expanded storage space under your Klobo sofa with this easy hack! I bet you didn’t know about this but the Klobo actually has a tonne of space right underneath the seats, inside the frame. We’re going to take advantage of this.

Okay so, first things first. This is going to be a bit handsy, DIY. You’ll need a friend for this because friends make projects fun. Buy him a six pack of appreciation for doing all the heavy lifting.

Things you need:

  1. Jigsaw
  2. Power drill
  3. Tape measure
  4. Spirit level
  5. Screwdriver
  6. Pencils
  7. Staple gun
  8. Craft knife / prybar
  9. 1″ screws (flathead, Phillips)
  10. plywood cut to fit underside of Klobo

The Process:

1. Flip the sofa onto it’s back like a turtle. Pause to laugh at it wiggling.
2. Use your prybar / craft knife to undo the staples fixing the covers to the front frame.
4. Pull up the foam from the frame (not off though!) we’re just lifting it up a little.
4. Take your spirit level, pencil and tape measure, then mark out a rectangle on the front of the frame (on top of the fabric and foam). Remember to square it!

5. Take that craft knife and cut through the foam and fabric, following the rectangle. Remove fabric and foam.

6. Now the wood is exposed, take your jigsaw and cut the rectangle out of the frame.
7. Fold the foam and fabric back over the cut, and staple it down. The jigsaw will create a lot of dust, so now would be a good time to clean things up with a duster / vacuum. Turn sofa upside down.

8. Take your piece of plywood (you can use two pieces side by side for better strength) and fasten it to the frame using your 1″ screws. Predrill before fastening (use a drill bit to drill a pilot hole that you then fasten the screw through.)
9. Flip back upright. Voila!

10 (optional). Slip on your Klobo slipcover, which we shamelessly make in a loose fit style that looks really great.

There you have it! Hope you enjoyed this, I know it’s helped a lot for my apartment 🙂 Oh, and if you can’t imagine this guide, we found one on YouTube.
