How to alter your couch if you have an uncomfortable one

Are there times when you regret purchasing a couch online without testing it out first? Or even times when it felt right at the store, but after purchasing it and setting it up at home, you realise that your new couch is uncomfortable in certain areas.

Of course, returning it would be the best option. But if you’re like me and you purchased something that isn’t exactly expensive, the hassle of sending it back to the store and having a living room without a couch for weeks just tires me out. Not to forget that you’d have to look for a new sofa in a rush.

Of course, this doesn’t apply to only newly bought furniture, sometimes it could also be second-hand sofas or hand-me-downs which are still very much functional.

Here are a few methods that you can use to make your existing sofa more comfortable to sit on.

1. Add pillows for support

A lot of the time, it’s the back cushions that do not offer proper support for our seating. When your posture isn’t right, you’re more likely to get lower back pain and that’s going to affect a lot of our daily activities.

Adding throw pillows and lumbar cushions could help with this. If you’re using pillows,
arrange as many as you’d like for the most comfort. Pile them up, the fluffier the better!

A lumbar cushion would, of course, work better for your back than a throw pillow. There are many types of lumbar cushions out there, so it’s important to find one that fits your back. The shape, firmness and durability are important points to consider when choosing a lumbar cushion.

One way to test out the lumbar cushion is to first sit down on the sofa in your usual posture, then slide the cushion behind your back until the placement feels comfortable. That’s how you’ll be able to tell definitively whether the cushion is right for your lower back.

2. Add foam inserts or stuffing if cushions aren’t firm

Although it’s unfortunate that you’ve gotten a sofa that doesn’t have firm cushions, you can still mend it easily. All you have to do is add more stuffing into the cushions or even replace the foam inserts so that they’re more comfortable for you.

It’s a pretty similar method to fixing a sagging sofa cushion as all you want is to firm it up.

3. Use slipcovers

OK, so the sofa is alright, but the texture of the slipcover or upholstery just isn’t making it. It’s too rough, it absorbs liquid too easily and the stains are so hard to remove!

That’s the smallest concern because we’ve got you covered! If your sofa is in a shape that we can cover, then we’re able to make customised couch slipcovers for you easily. Whether you need functions like liquid-resistant (for that party wine), claw-proof (your naughty cat) or temperature-regulating (for the hot days and cold seasons), you can find them in various colours and designs here.

4. Layer on the throws

Some fluff would be nice on the sofa for spots that you frequently sit on. Make these areas cushy so that they’re soft enough for you to sit there for hours. If you can, do get sheepskin or fluffy alternatives so you’ll be in the cosiest spot you can be, especially during the winter months.
