What we know about the IKEA Backamo sofa bed

Once upon a time, there was a sofa called the Backamo Sofa Bed which was available at IKEA. Sometime after 2000 and before 2010, it was discontinued to the chagrin of many. The Backamo Sofabed looks just like the Backamo but in true IKEA style, their slipcovers are not interchangeable (unlike Pottery Barn sofa and sleeper covers).

What we know about the Backamo Sofabed:

  • Has 2 seat cushions and 6 loose back cushions – 4 large square cushions and 2 smaller square cushions.
  • Round armrests which slope outwards slightly. Backrest is the same height as the armrests.
  • Original slipcover has corner pleats and another pleat in the middle, below the seat.
  • It was sold a long time ago and there are some out there which are still surviving and need some loving 🙂
The Backamo Sofa Bed has seen better days Cushions removed to show the pull-up bed function.

Commonly confused models:

– The Varnamo sofa has 2 seat cushions and an odd number of back cushions like the Backamo, but it’s originally upholstered, not slipcovered (at least, until we came along).

– The Backamo sofa looks just like the Backamo sofa bed, sans bed function. In terms of sizing it’s so close as the sofa is 212cm versus 218cm for the sofabed, so the sofa’s cover is too small for the sofabed.

– The Ektorp 2 Seat Sofabed is what a customer of ours thought it was before realising her mistake but if you look at the photo above, you can see how it happened because the Ektorp has rounded armrests and also opens up to a big gap under the seats.

Replacement Slipcovers for the Backamo Sofa Bed

We heard about the Backamo Sofabed but since it’s such an old, obscure model, we never had had a chance to create a slipcover for it, or even completely confirm that it’s the Backamo until earlier this year when someone showed us a tag on their sofabed.

Since then we’ve had two opportunities to create slipcovers for this sofabed and I gotta say, I’m blown away by the fact that we’re saving sofas that are almost 20 years old. Taking into account again that the foam in the cushions are all still plump and comfortable, it’s a pretty good way to keep old furniture alive and out of the landfills.

If you think you have a certain sofa, or if you aren’t sure which sofa you have, drop us a line! We’re happy to play detective with the help of a few photos and if it’s something we don’t recognise, we might be able to make custom slipcovers for you anyway 🙂

Yes! This is my sofabed. Are replacement covers available now, and where can I get one?
