6 underrated IKEA sofas you didn’t know you could upgrade

So, you’ve got an IKEA sofa that no one seems to remember — not even IKEA. Maybe it’s been your movie-night sidekick for years or the cosy crash zone for every guest who’s ever overstayed their welcome. But now it’s looking a bit… tired.

And finding a new cover that suits your current lifestyle and aesthetic preferences? Practically impossible.

The good news? You’re not stuck with stains or a style you’ve outgrown. At Comfort Works, we love a forgotten favourite. That’s why we make custom sofa covers for some of IKEA’s most underrated (and discontinued) sofa models — so your old faithful doesn’t have to be the odd one out in your living room.

We’ve rounded up six IKEA sofas you can still upgrade and tips on how we would do it.

Custom IKEA couch covers for six forgotten models — and why they’re worth saving

1. IKEA PARUP: The comfy classic that flew under the radar

IKEA PARUP

The PÄRUP isn’t the most famous IKEA sofa out there, but it is soft, supportive, and surprisingly roomy for its footprint. It has that perfect sink-in comfort without hogging the whole room.

If yours has been through a lot (pet paws, coffee spills, toddler tumbles — we get it), it’s probably due for a refresh. The IKEA couch cover range is limited to four colours, but why should you limit yourself.

Our custom slipcovers are designed to hug every curve of the Parup, whether you have the loveseat, 3-seater or chaise. Our sofa covers are made from durable fabrics and come in colours that can completely transform your space. Which one should you get? We’ve got a few suggestions:

  • Whether you’re a minimalist or just prefer neutral colours, opt for Mod Basketweave in Pearl or Oatmeal. This sofa cover fabric can add texture to your space.
  • Another colour that pairs well with PARUP’s solid birch legs is the Signature Microfibre sofa cover in Silver Sage. This cover is scratch-resistant — ideal for pet owners.

2. IKEA SLATORP: The shape-shifting sofa that’s worth holding onto

The IKEA SLATORP isn’t your average sofa. With its distinctive silhouette and clever extendable back cushions, it’s built for lounging your way. Just a simple grip and you’ve got cosy head support for binge-watching or book reading.

But here’s the thing: the SLATORP isn’t available in every market anymore, and finding a replacement cover? Practically impossible. That’s where we come in.

Our custom IKEA couch covers are made to fit the SLATORP’s unique structure — adjustable cushions and all — so you don’t have to compromise on comfort or style. Whether you want to revive the original look or try something completely different, we’ve got fabrics, textures, and colours to make your SLATORP feel fresh again:

  • The current IKEA range features green, yellow and grey, but we think a warmer tone may make for a great change. Try our durable and machine washable Everyday Weave in Rust.
  • If you’d prefer a more luxurious aesthetic at an affordable price, opt for our Everyday Velvet sofa covers. Cacao or Storm would suit the SLATORP perfectly.

3. IKEA SMEDSTORP: Retro charm with lasting comfort

There’s something timeless about the SMEDSTORP. With its cone-shaped legs, structured silhouette and plush foam cushions, it brings just the right mix of mid-century charm and everyday comfort.

It’s a keeper — but what happens when the cover starts showing its age? Unfortunately, IKEA doesn’t offer replacement covers for the SMEDSTORP anymore. The good news? We do.

Our IKEA couch covers can give it a fresh new look that suits your space today. Unsure of what will suit SMEDSTORP’s vintage vibe? We’ve got you covered:

  • We’re partial to Signature Microfibre’s Forest Green for this IKEA model. It leans into its retro feel while still feeling sophisticated and timeless.
  • If you’re looking for a pop of colour, our Mod Boucle sofa cover in Amber creates a sense of drama. It has the added bonus of being spill-resistant.

4. IKEA VINLIDEN: The comfy sofa that’s surprisingly easy to move

IKEA VINLIDEN

The IKEA VINLIDEN is all about effortless living — and we’re not just talking about comfort. Sure, it’s got soft, deep cushions and a supportive high back that makes it perfect for lazy Sundays and late-night chats.

But what really sets it apart? Its clever, no-fuss frame that’s a breeze to move, assemble and take apart — no tools, no stress. That makes it the dream sofa for renters, serial rearrangers, or anyone who’s ever tried to squeeze a 3-seater through a narrow doorway.

But when it comes to giving your VINLIDEN a style refresh, you’re on your own — IKEA has only four cover options for this model. That’s where Comfort Works steps in.

Our made-to-measure slipcovers are designed to fit the VINLIDEN perfectly, so you can keep the sofa that fits your life and give it a look that fits your home:

  • If you want something bold but still a colour that’s easy to mix-and-match, we’d recommend our Everyday Cotton in Navy.
  • The rounded shape of the VINLIDEN also lends itself well to the sumptuous hues of our Mod Chenille in Espresso. It adds a touch of sophistication.

5. IKEA Dalarna: Minimalist design with major makeover potential

Remember the DALARNA? With its crisp lines, deep seats, and minimalist vibes, it was basically the quiet achiever of the IKEA family.

If yours is still going strong (or buried under a throw to hide the wear and tear), there’s no need to give up on it just yet. Our custom IKEA couch covers bring the DALARNA back to life with updated fabrics, fresh colours, and a fit so good, your friends might think you bought a whole new sofa.

And because every cover is made-to-measure, you can keep that comfy structure while giving it a serious style upgrade:

  • DALARNA deserves to be draped in Velvet. Our Everyday Velvet sofa covers are an obvious choice. Dark Teal or Cacao would give it the sophistication it deserves.
  • Have you got pets? Then perhaps our Signature Velvet range would be better with its scratch-resistance and durability. Depending on your decor, we’d opt for shades Bayleaf or Sunset.

6. IKEA PS 2012: Discontinued, but far from done

If you know, you know — the IKEA PS 2012 isn’t just a sofa, it’s a design moment. With its sculptural base and clean, modern lines, this discontinued IKEA sofa was never meant to blend in. It’s bold, functional, and full of personality — and if you’ve still got one, consider yourself lucky.

But as striking as it is, updating the PS 2012 can be tricky. IKEA no longer sells covers for it, which means when the fabric wears out, most people assume it’s game over.

Not so fast. At Comfort Works, we make custom sofa covers that are designed to fit every curve and detail — including that standout base. So you can keep your iconic PS 2012 looking sharp, comfy, and completely you:

IKEA couch cover: Bonus tip

Here’s something not everyone knows — and it might just be a game-changer.

While we’re big believers that IKEA sofas are a solid investment, the standard colour or fabric options don’t always hit the mark. If you’re eyeing a new sofa but nothing in the showroom feels quite “you,” there’s a smart workaround.

You can actually order many IKEA sofas without a cover. That means you can skip the standard slip and go straight for a custom Comfort Works one — made in the fabric, fit and colour you really want.

Whether it’s a buttery-soft velvet, a high-performance weave or a family-friendly fabric that stands up to spills, our covers let you elevate your IKEA sofa right from day one.

Accent chairs decoded: expert tips to choose, style and pair them like a pro

What do Michelle Obama, Drew Barrymore and Kourtney Kardashian have in common? They know the power of a good accent chair for your living room.

These powerhouse women prove that a statement piece of furniture does not always have to be about wild colours. The former First Lady went for a subtle, cream accent chair with a unique shape. It manages to be the focal point of a calm living space.

The Beautiful Drew Chair by Drew Barrymore has gone viral for being the dream chair for Booktok girlies. And can you blame them? It’s a cosy swivel accent chair! Then there’s Kourtney’s Instagram post on the cloud-like Alpha Club Chair from Paulin Paulin Paulin. Furniture with sculptural elements and soft curves — need we say more?

What can we conclude? Accent chairs are the ultimate design flex. They might be small in size, but when chosen well, they can completely transform a room.

So, what are accent chairs exactly?

Statement makers. Mood lifters. Space fillers. Accent chairs do a lot more than sit in the corner looking pretty. They are single-seaters that add contrast, style or focus to a room. It’s there to make a visual statement — whether through colour, texture or shape — while still offering a cosy place to sit.

And what’s the difference between an accent chair and an armchair? It mostly comes down to purpose. Armchairs are typically designed for everyday lounging and usually match your main seating set. The right accent chair is more about adding flair and function — they’re the unexpected heroes that tie a space together or give it a little edge.

But with so many shapes, styles and fabrics out there, picking the perfect one can feel a bit… overwhelming. Should it match the rest of your furniture? Can you have two in the same living room? And how do you actually style one?

Spill the tea: Comfort Works’ expert tips on choosing & styling accent chairs for your living room

To answer your burning questions, we turned to two of our in-house design experts — Suki Chan, Comfort Works’ Art Director, and Hazirah Hamidi, our Social Media Specialist. From how to choose an accent chair that works for your space, to tips on pairing, layering and dressing it up, they’re here to help you get it just right.

How to choose the right accent chair?

An accent chair is a deliberate choice, one that marries function and design. “It’s a design decision that adds character and contrast that elevates a space, drawing your eyes straight to it,” explains Suki.

You must first consider your space and ask yourself, is the chair meant to be the star or the supporting act?

“Once they’ve figured out the chair’s intention, everything else should fall into place — shape, colour, placement,” she adds.

Suki’s top tips:

  • It’s all about balancing the contrast. I’ll go for a chair with a curvy silhouette if the other elements in the room are super structured — just to keep it from feeling too flat.
  • I think it’s also important to think about negative space – those “empty” areas actually do a lot of work in highlighting an accent chair, letting it shine.
  • Size matters. You can have the most beautiful piece, but if it’s too bulky for the space, it’ll feel too cramped and heavy. On the flip side, if it’s too small, it’ll look like it’s floating awkwardly like a lonely island.

Can you have two accent chairs in your living room?

“It depends on the size of your living room,” says Hazirah. If you’ve got space for two accent chairs, why not?

Note that space is not just about floor space, but rather allowing for your living room to still have an open feel. It shouldn’t make it cluttered or suffocated.

Pro tip: How to prevent clutter? Pre-plan your furniture. While decorative items can move around, your furniture needs a designated space.

If space is an issue, consider creating little sections in your home, like a reading nook or a coffee station with said accent chair. Then if you do need an extra seat for a party, you can move things around.

As a self-professed mismatch girlie, Hazirah doesn’t believe that you accent chairs need to be the same. She does explain that there are ways to embrace the maximalist mismatch while maintaining a cohesive space.

Pick one colour story. “For example, you can go for all bold colours or just pastels. If you’re choosing pastels, pick a pastel green for one chair and a pastel yellow for another.”

This way, you are free to explore different shapes, styles and patterns within that colour story. Its a great tip to ensure your space stays cohesive without too much effort or a trained eye for design.

“In 2025, people are embracing mismatching,” Hazirah says. This is partially because of an uptick in thrifting furniture, a trend we can definitely get on board with.

How would you dress up an accent chair?

The obvious answer would be pillows and throws, but we want to dig a little deeper to explore the best ways to pick the right pillows and throws for your star seat. Our style experts have slightly different approaches.

Suki has a minimalist approach. She plays with textures to compliment your accent chair, but keep it simple.

“Even with neutrals, contrast still works,” she says.  “I like to go in with a rich, bold colour to compliment a neutral coloured accent chair to break the monotony. Just pick one thing that plays against the main colour and keep the rest chill.”

A planner at heart, Suki suggests creating a mood board with your desired colours and textures and styles so you can visualise the look you want to create. Her styling techniques are guided by fabrics themselves.

“In cooler months, I’ll go for chunky knits, soft wools or faux fur throws — something super cosy and adds a bit of weight and warmth to the space,” she adds.

“Deeper tones also adds to the fall or winter vibe. When it starts warming up, I switch to lighter fabrics like linen or cotton, and work in soft neutrals with warm tones like terracotta or sage green.”

Hazirah, on the other hand, is more guided by colour. “Whatever the accent chair is, do the opposite,” she says. “If it’s already a striped accent chair, go with a solid colour pillow. Pillows are the easiest way to dress up your living room.”

True to her maximalist styling, Hazirah says more pillows the better. They are an economical way of switching up the style in a room, as you can quickly (and affordably) switch the colours, patterns and textures of your cushions to suit what you feel.

Something both our style queens agree on is that your accent chair must be comfortable. Style should not trump your comfort, in fact you can find pieces that meet both needs.

“It’s all about doing a little homework — especially if you’re shopping online and can’t sit in it first,” says Suki. “The design might be gorgeous, but if it feels like sitting on a rock, that’s a hard pass for me.”

Before you sit down: Final tips from Suki and Hazirah

What’s your go-to styling tip to make a corner feel both comfy and post-worthy?

Hazirah: Number one, is the lighting. The lights are important. If you have an accent chair, I would definitely put a light over it.

I hate white lights because its a bit more harsh and actually doesn’t warm up the space.

How do you make sure an accent chair is comfortable, not just stylish?

Suki: Always, always check the dimensions. You wouldn’t want something super shallow or ridiculously deep that leaves your feet hanging in the air. Also, look out for the cushioning material and make sure it’s not just a thin layer of foam.

Any layout tips to make a living room feel more connected and welcoming?

Hazirah: No sofas against the wall. I feel like that makes the living room more cohesive. You want to have a space where you can go from one end to another end. Definitely have a really good coffee table or a snack table.

What’s one piece of styling advice you’d give someone who wants their accent chair to reflect them?

Suki: Don’t overthink it! There’s no right or wrong way, just make it feel like you. It’s actually the perfect time to break the rules a little.

Hazirah: I think the accent chair really needs to fit your living room, not your living room to fit your accent chair.

Summary

  • Accent chairs are statement-making single-seaters that add personality, contrast and comfort to your space.
  • Choose one based on its purpose: star of the show or subtle sidekick? Shape, size and fabric matter just as much as style.
  • Yes, you can have two — just make sure they feel intentional and don’t overwhelm your layout.
  • Dress it up with texture, colour and seasonal layers — but don’t forget comfort is key.
  • Our top picks for where to shop? Design Within Reach, Castlery, PAMONO, Chairish — and IKEA if you want a great base to customise with a Comfort Works slipcover.

Style it your way, make it cosy, and let your accent chair do the talking.

Butter yellow is back — here’s why we can’t get enough of this feel-good shade for our living spaces

Does anyone else have deja-vu? Headlines naming butter yellow as a trending colour for 2025 have cropped up in the worlds of fashion, interior design and more.

Butter yellow has woven its way onto runways, with icons like Timothée Chalamet and Sabrina Carpenter embracing the hue from head to toe. Even a version of this creamy pastel has been dubbed Drew Barrymore Yellow by Pantone, in honour of her 50th birthday.

Interior design and home appliances have jumped aboard this pastel wave. For instance, KitchenAid’s newly released colourway is butter yellow. The colour is everywhere right now, but is it just a passing fad?

Butter yellow: the colour trend that won’t quit

Vogue claims that this colour trend kicked off in 2024, when Louis Vuitton sent butter yellow pieces down their spring 2024 runway. However, we would argue that this particular shade is evergreen, especially in your home.

In fact, Princess Diana’s Kensington Palace in the 80’s featured this popular pastel yellow. She worked with British interior designer Dudley Poplak, and included butter yellow walls in the drawing room, the dining room, and the nursery suite. No one questions her impeccable taste.

Some believe that this “it” colour feels like a more exciting neutral. One that allows you to step outside the mundane off-whites without jumping into the deep end of rich blues and greens.

“For several years, neutrals took over, and homes felt tonal and beige,” says designer Autumn Hachey. “Now, people are craving colour. Yellow is a beautiful, bright colour that feels opposite to beige in terms of energy, but in a buttery tone, it still feels safe to explore.”

Others believe that it is the “foodification of colour” — attaching food to colour to make it more sumptuous and attractive — is the reason butter yellow has such a pull. We’re inclined to agree. We wordsmiths know the power of describing something as buttery, creamy and soft, even as a wall paint colour.

Then again, we’d be remiss not to mention the contentious history of butter yellow synthetic dyes, and the rise and scandal of the margarine industry. We’ll save that rabbit hole for later.

There’s something about butter yellow that keeps us coming back. Unlike bold, punchy yellows that scream for attention, butter yellow is soft, creamy, and effortlessly inviting. It’s the colour of warm morning light, golden-hued kitchens from childhood memories, and the kind of glow that makes any space feel cosier.

The psychology of butter yellow

Colour plays a huge role in how we experience our surroundings, and butter yellow is all about comfort and joy. It sits between the vibrancy of classic yellow and the calm of neutral tones, making it the perfect balance of uplifting and soothing.

While some view this colour like a ray of sunshine, there are people who feel this shade unlocks irritability. So if you’re considering a drastic change in your living space with the colour yellow, ensure that everyone in your household has a positive reaction to your chosen hue.

In a kitchen, butter yellow adds a sense of warmth and cheer, making it the perfect place to gather. For your bedroom, it can bring a gentle glow that feels relaxing yet uplifting. In a living room, it can create an inviting atmosphere that feels both fresh and nostalgic.

5 ways to incorporate butter yellow into your living space

Butter yellow has a way of making any room feel warm, inviting, and effortlessly stylish. Whether you’re drawn to its soft, sunlit glow or just looking for a fresh pop of colour, there are plenty of ways to work this trending shade into your home. Here’s how to do it without overwhelming your space.

1. Set the tone with wall paint

If you love the idea of waking up to a room bathed in warmth, butter yellow walls might be your perfect match. This shade works beautifully in living rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens, creating a soft, inviting backdrop without feeling too bold.

There is a selection of butter yellow wall paints to choose from but we are partial to Spring Breeze 5 by Dulux and Florence by Edward Bulmer.

Pair it with crisp white trim for a classic look or muted earthy tones for a cosy, modern feel. And if painting an entire room feels like too much, try a feature wall or a butter yellow ceiling for a subtle but stunning effect.

If you want your sofa to match (without investing in a brand new one), we’d go with:

2. Anchor the room with a butter yellow rug

A butter yellow rug brings just the right mix of cheer and sophistication. Whether you choose a plush or a patterned rug, this is a great way to introduce colour without a massive investment.

Plus, it grounds the room (literally) tying together all the other elements in your space.

We’ve been eyeing IKEA’s RINGKLOCKA because its abstract pattern is quite fun and the texture can make your room feel interesting. If you’d prefer something more geometric, have a look at IKEA’s flat-woven TELEGRAFLINJE

3. Add warmth through art

Butter yellow artwork instantly lifts a space, whether it’s a large statement piece or a small framed print on a gallery wall.

Abstract paintings, vintage posters, or even DIY pieces with soft yellow hues add depth and personality without overwhelming your decor. Check out these stunning butter yellow prints from Michelle McGuire

The best part? Art is easy to swap out, so you can easily experiment with colour. Don’t limit yourself when it comes to art. Even decorative pieces count.

If you want something out of the box, there’s this Off-White Blob Candle Holder by James Shaw or a decorative Toikka Mari Bird from iittala. For our function and form lovers, think of furniture that doubles as art. Our favourites are Hem’s Yellow Glyph Beta Side Table and Kartell’s Componibili Bio Storage Unit

4. Layer in textiles with pillows and throws

One of the easiest (and cosiest) ways to introduce butter yellow into your home is through pillows and throws. A soft, buttery-hued throw casually draped over your sofa instantly warms up the space, while cushions in complementary shades help balance the look.

Mixing different textures, like linen, velvet, or chunky knits, adds depth and keeps things visually interesting. We like the Kyree Textured Throw from Pottery Barn and the Moroccan Ocher Throw Pillow from Crate & Barrel.

And the beauty of textiles? They’re completely flexible. When you’re ready for a new look, simply swap out your cushions and throws for a fresh take. Even a beanbag like the Cleo Pouf or is a great way to incorporate yellow textiles that can be moved into another space if you’re bored.

5. Go bold with a butter yellow sofa — without the long-term commitment

For those who love a statement piece, a butter yellow sofa is a bold yet beautiful choice. It instantly becomes the heart of the room, adding warmth and character.

But what if you get tired of it? That’s where our sofa covers come in. With a custom couch cover from Comfort Works, you can switch up your sofa’s look whenever you want — keeping things fresh without buying a brand-new piece of furniture.

Alternatively you could try our Mod Boucle or Performance Weave sofa covers in Amber, if you’d like a richer yellow on your current sofa.
